Many people have responded that I can get accented vowels using Insert->Symbol or AltGr+punctuation mark.
These don't work for me. I am using version .7 on Redhat Linux 6.2, and the English version of Abiword. Insert->Symbol brings up a symbol font, but it doesn't have any accented vowels in it. AltGr (I assume this means the Alt key) plus a punctuation mark doesn't do anything at all.
