To get the accented vowels, and other non-ascii characters, do this: Using the menus or the insert symbol icon, go to the insert symbol dialog box. It will show a bunch of math symbols.
In the font list window, click on the name of the font that you are already using. This will replace the math symbols with the non-ascii characters. Click on the symbol you want. Click on the insert button. Click on the close button.
