Marvin24 proposed the following answer:
the bootloader doesn't check what kind of thing it boots (otherwise a
modified kernel wouldn't boot at all). it's more a issue with either the
(machine id <- that's my guess) or how the bootloader sets up the hw
(.29 may expect something different). on the other hand, the .36 kernel
boots fine (with modified machine id).
