This is my personal opinion. I know JAWS might have lots of features. But NVDA served me very well.
I agree with you on this statement and ensure that I donate to the project every year on my birthday 🙏🏻

Hey,
Glad to see this thread.

If Microsoft were serious about Narrator, the NVDA project would not have been born in the first place.

I have been working in the private sector in India for the last 7 years as an AI engineer.
I have worked with two multinational corporations and an early stage start-up. All of them have allowed me to use NVDA as my screen reader.
I had to raise a request to undergo a software audit for NVDA because it is an open source software.

In my current company I am only using NVDA. I have not even requested for JAWS. They are happy with that because of avoiding such a huge sum on a very specialized software license.

Also NVDA has saved me in the start-up because they cannot afford JAWS.

I consciously avoid buying a JAWS license because I do not want to give the impression that employing a visually impaired candidate is very expensive. So that I can easily emphasise on disability hiring without making it a financial burden.

This is my personal opinion. I know JAWS might have lots of features. But NVDA served me very well.

Thanks for bringing this to the group.

Hi Pranav,

This is certainly not unique to India. In South Africa I worked for FNB (First National Bank) and they too refused for many years to provide Jaws on my workstation. Even when they did (after much haggling from my end), there was no hope for an upgrade since Jaws 2017 which they finally provided to me in the year 2018.

We’re talking about a National Bank here. So that’s perhaps true in many countries, despite legislation existing protecting people with disabilities in the workplace. The legal framework is one thing and practical implementation and enforcement is far from applied.

Have a good day Folks.

Subject: RE: [AI] Microsoft Narrator bad condition and JAWS monopoly

Hi,

I work in India but at a foreign bank. Over here, both jaws and nvda are used.

However, these programs are packaged using Microsoft intune for installation and are running a few versions behind. This is the case with many large enterprises.

It is ironic that companies are uncomfortable with open source programs. A large chunk of the server stack is open source. In addition, it is easier to audit the source code for flaws.

Pranav
