Many of the laptops have a switch that gets activated if the lid of the
laptop is closed. You can use and external keyboard and set power options to
do nothing when lid is closed and the monitor will go off in this situation.
Battery life increases by 30% by this.

Some laptops do have a feature to turn off the monitor. If they do not, you
could always try the laptop battery saver from
http://www.techno-vision.co.uk which is what I do.

As for time, I have got about 2 hours extra. A lot depends on what you are
doing with the laptop and the condition of the laptop battery.
