Subject: Re: [AI] paper presentation on JAWS-Help needed

hi,

here are some helpful tips, and for more information, feel free to contact
me at:
[email protected]

1. what is jaws?

Jaws is a commercial screen reader to read the on-screen information outloud
for the sake of the blind computer users as well as converting the on-screen
information into readable braille code using a refreshable braille display.
Jaws works for the windows operating system as well as the old DOS operating
system made by microsoft inc. with all their releases including windows 95,
98, ME, 2000, xp, and vista.

the word jaws in the English language is the plural of jaw, to reflect its
relevance to articulation, however, it is the abbreviation of: Job Access
Wtih Speech, to reflect the deeper thought behind manufacturering such type
of software to enable the blind community access their jobs smoothly using
their computers with no problems related to their sightless eyes while a
computer is operated mainly using a screen monitor.

2. . how it is helpful for the VI's?

Jaws is helpful for the VI's as long as they are able to make benefit of
using their computers, it could deal with all microsoft compatible and
accessible software applications as well as the capabilities to create
custom scripts to make the inaccessible software aplications easy to use
programs and blind friendly.

3. How does it convert text to voice, some technical background?

Jaws is as any other screen reader is built on two major classes, mainly, a
speech synthesizer and a screen reading software; and here is how it works:

a software or hardware speech synthesizer aims at producing synthetic voice
simulating human natural sounding voice. Jaws includes the Eloquence
software synthesizer works as the default speech synthesizer used. Eloquence
could read around 10 major language including American and British English,
French, german, etc. The Eloquence software synthesizer is not as natural as
should be, but still it is considered the most intelligible software
synthesizer used by the blind all over the world either being a part of the
jaws screen reader, or any other computer or mobile screen readers.

the Jaws screen reading software, which determines and controls the
behaviour of eloquence; for example, reading a certain sets of punctuations
and ignoring others, reading numbers in digits mode or in pairs or in total
numbers, recognizing the alt tags for web graphics and much more.

thus, jaws is a combination of a default software speech synthesizer and a
screen reading software to read outloud all possible on-screen information
as well as informational messages related to progress bars, graphical shapes
and icons, in addition to the powerful capabilities to be application
specific customizable.

Many other features are included in jaws to make it one of the most popular
screen readers such as: jaws scripting language, jaws frame viewer, braille
viewer, window class re-assign, jaws configuration manager, keyboard
manager, speech and braille manager, jaws tandem, and much more.

4. what are the application it supports?

5. what are the advantages and disadvantages of jaws?

some of the Jaws advantages may be, and not limited to:

.setting up the international standards in using speech and braille with
keyboard for the sake of the blind computer users, programmers, web
developpers, etc.
.providing access to all expected software applications under windows
.easy to use interface and terminology.
.flexibility to detect third party installed speech engines in
non-jaws-supported languages.
.reasonable sollution in using the windows mouse arrow on screen to locate
unreachable items with the keyboard, using the so-called jaws and invisible
cursors.
.reasonable sollution in virtualizing on-screen static content to be
keyboard readable using a virtual viewer to work with static screen text
such as internet pages, .pdf files, and .chm files.
.the portable version of jaws that may help the blind access foreign
computers outside using a thumb drive or a flash memory.
.and much more.

Though, some of the jaws disadvantages may include, but not limited to:

.being a commercial screen reader, not all blind users could afford buying,
and upgrading it over their machines due to its critical price.
.necessity to run with administrative privelages to install jaws on any
machine.
.using a video intercept driver which requires a proper stable VGA driver to
be installed before hand so that jaws could work properly.
.technical problems like installation of the microsoft visual C++
redistributable package resulting machine hanging when not addressed
properly or when a non microsoft visual C++ java applications conflicts it.
.included older jaws scripts for earlier versions of the mentioned supported
programs such as the old scripts for SPSS 9.0, though the program is now in
its version 15 or higher.
.and much more.
