We should involve ourselves in all kinds of social activities, especially issues related to common interests. VI students should fight for the interests of the common students, others should also join any movement in the interest of the common people. I am not suggesting that we should not take care of our own interests. We have to fight for our interests. The disabled alone can understand their problems. At the same time we are social beings, too. So, wherever you are, help your dighted colleagues and friends, if possible, join active politics according to your own belief.

i heard in a speech of shri Somnath Chatterjee, the former lok sabha
speaker, that some time back, there was a member of parliament named
Jamunaprasad Shastri, who happened to be a person with visual
disability.

No, none of these two politicians was partially sighted. Both of them
were
totally sightless. Sadhan Gupta was a successful lawyer and he was the
additional advocate general of West Bengal for quite a long time.
Dipankar
Roy travelled alone almost all over India. Both of them lost their sight
in

early childhood.

I have also heard of S.R. Bombai who had one leg only. He was Union
minister

for some time and worked as the President of the Janata Party. I don't
know

when he lost his leg, before he joined politics or not.

S.K. Rumta of NFB contested for a Lok-Sabha seat from Delhi in the 80s as
an

independent candidate. He lost to Rajesh Khanna, true, but he polled 6000
votes. He did not represent any political party, as far as I know.

We can think of the issue from another view point. We are now given dummy
Braille ballots to make the election more accessible. How far are we
really

remembered by the parties? Since we are spread across the country, how
big
the challlened community is, we cannot influence the result. But religion
or

language-based communities can influence the election in a more effective
way. Since they are concentrated at a particular region, parties have to
look upon them with respect with eyes on their votes.

Anpother friend of mine wants some information on visually impaired or
other
physically challenged persons in active politics. I know of barrister
Sadhan
Gupta who was elected MP from Kolkata South in 1967 for CPIM. I also
know

of
Dipankar Roy who contested the election on behalf of SUCI for the
assembly
seat of Rashbihari Avenue, kolkata in 1991. Though he did not win, he
was
very famous as an orator and as an organiser. People remember him for
his
role in the students' movement in the 70s and the 80s.

Can you supply some more information or some good articles on it?
