Though I am not against lap tops or technology, I do not think the problem
of the documents having been read to us or known to us correctly before
these documents are signed or thumbed by us, can be resolved by distribution
of lap tops.
I work in a Government school.
I have to sign numerous diaries on daily basis.
As a policy of the Education Directorate, the class monitors have a diary,
wherein, every teacher who takes a period, has to mention in the diary as to
what topic he/she dealt with on that particular day and has to put his/her
signature against it.
Now, I dictate to the monitor, whatever I taught on that day.
I am not sure that the student has written it correctly or not as these
students sometimes, are very weak and cannot write aeven a simple Hindi
word.
But I believe that the student has written according to my instruction, and
I sign the diary.
Daily, I am assigned more than five periods. So I sign at least five
diaries.
Do you think I am going to scan each and every diary before signing the
same?
Every order, that is circulated by my H O S, is hand written.
The student who brings it to me, cannot read english fluently. So I just
sign the orderbook even without bothering what it is.
There are problems which need a deep consideration.
I have purchased and sold my residence more than three times.
Every time, I had to put my signatures at least fifty times.
I had to depend upon the lawyer who sollicitted on my behalf and the
property dealer who represented my case.
Not only the visually impaired, many other people also have to go through
this cumbersome ordeal. and believe me, they also do not bother to know as
to what is written in the document.

This is the exact reason We have been advocating and fighting for the
right to laptops and desktops for all blind students across
universities in India.
JNU, DU, HCU, and EFLOU have done this; rest have to brought on board...
And each member on Access India has his-her responsibility to work for
this vision in his/her capacity.

Dear Maitreya
Thank you for putting this concern on public fora.
Though I'm not very experienced, because it comes from age, they say.
but I think, if visually challenged are denied many services and
designations solely on ground of not able to sign, better There has to
be classes across India to teach them how to sign. then all can
practice and become habitual.
I have recently learnt how to sign, you know. and now I practice
fifteen minutes everyday.
Now as far as your question is concerned, Unable to read the documents
on which your thumb is required. Better ask them to send you a soft
copy of document as well. But I can understand, when documents are in
Hindi and in other regional languages, trust is the key. I also don't
know how to deal with it.
But if one has to deal only in english all the time. then such
difficulties can be overcome.pretty easy keep scanner in your office,
and appoint a person to do the needful for you.

hi all,
here i would like to draw your attention on an serious matter .
in today's time ,when we can't trust on anyone ,if the matter is of
money or property .
so what precautions should be taken while signing through thumb marks
on important documents ?
if the documents are in hard copy then it is obvious that we can't
read that and we have to trust someone for it .
so what to do in such situations ?
i want the opinion of expirienced members .
thanks,
Maitreya Shah
