Visually-challenged students who excelled in the public examinations this
year were felicitated by Nethrodaya’s Free Residential Higher Secondary
School for the Blind. Students who topped the tenth and twelfth standard
board examinations from various districts of Tamil Nadu took part along
with their parents in the event held on Sunday. R. Dinesh of Coimbatore,
who stood first in plus two, and M. Andal of Chennai, who secured the first
rank in class X, received special awards. Outstanding visually impaired
students from various districts received certificates, medals and cash

To ease the journey of the disabled. More than 100 persons with movement
disability were presented with side-wheel scooters at a function held here
on Sunday. Minister for Social Justice and Panchayats M.K. Muneer
inaugurated the programme that was part of the Subhayatra’, a project of
the Kerala State Handicapped Persons Welfare Corporation (KSHPWC). Selected
college students who are visually impaired were given laptops with tracking
software during the programme. More at

Two visually-challenged individuals have lost their lives after being hit
by a train at the Kadakkavoor railway station here late on Saturday night.
The deceased were identified as Bijo Varghese and Shaji Daniel from
Tiruvalla and Seethathodu respectively in Pathanamthitta district.
According to police, both the deceased were in the district to attend a
public function at the Blind School in Varkala. The incident occurred when
the duo were catching the return train from Anchuthengu where they had
visited a mutual friend. Though Bijo was rushed to the hospital he could
not be saved, while the body of Shaji was recovered from the railway track
on Sunday morning. The bodies have been returned to the family of the
deceased after autopsy at the Government Medical College here, police said.

“The celebration is aimed to create awareness among people. They (special
children) don’t need sympathy but a guidance and platform to showcase their
talent,” added C Govindakrishnan, founder of Nethrodaya. Nethrodaya, an
organisation that works for the disabled, held its eighth Visually Impaired
Achievers Awards function on their premises, on Sunday. This year, 56
visually challenged school children from all over Tamil Nadu, who passed
classes 10 and 12 with over 90 per cent marks, were awarded with
certificates, medals and a prize money of Rs 5,000. Justice V
Ramasubramanian of the Madras High Court spoke about a visually impaired
law student. “He used to travel 20 kilometres everyday and come to college.
He did exceptionally well in academics and put the rest to shame. He is now
working in a reputed law firm. “What I’m trying to say is, all of us are
equal. All we need is an opportunity to showcase our talent. I hope that
this situation improves with time,” he added. His speech received a

Centre, Mumbai. Qualification: H.S.C. plus Certificate Course in Computer
Application (minimum 6 months) from a recognised institute.  Preference
will be given to graduates.  Candidate should have minimum one year
clerical work experience.  Age Limit: 27 years.  Candidates appointed will
be rotated in any Units of TMC based on the needs of the Units concerned as
