(notepad has a limit of about 64KB) Try a text display utility like list (look on simtelnet/msdos/txtutl/list77a.zip B 87430 921006 V. Buerg's classic ASCII/binary file viewer simtelnet/msdos/txtutl/list93a.zip B 114276 971205 V. Buerg's classic ASCII/binary file viewer There are also lots of other viewers and editors there. The simtelnet/win3/txtutl/ directory may be of use. Under MS-DOS 5 and 6, edit.com is a stub that calls "qbasic.exe /editor " for use to edit text files. I think this can handle larger files. This should get you started. -- | [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jerel. --- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 16:26:24 PDT From: "Jerel D. Then it physically can't be }overwritten anymore.... } }for i:= 1 to 2000 do overwrite-Bios; } }so that would mean a virus can destroy the virus. } }Maybe someone with more expertise on physical bios stuff could tell us }more about this. } There are a number of factors here. 1: Older machines have a BIOS chip that can not be overwritten by the hardware in the machine. Contrary to what was said earlier, they often, but not always, can be reprogrammed if removed from the machine. 2: Even with these, the CMOS can be messed up by malicious code, and some bugs do that. 3: Some newer machines have what is called a "Flash Upgradable BIOS" The good thing about these is that they can be upgraded by software. The BAD thing about these is that they often do not require a manual intervention: hardware switch, to be upgraded. This allows a virus or trojan to alter them. 4: All of these that I know of, make the mistake of not having a fixed amount of code that will allow i minimalist boot from floppy to reprogram them if they get messed up, via failed upgrade or malicious code. If they get messed up, the machine will not boot. If the machine will not boot, then they can not be fixed without taking them out of the machine. 5: The biggest problem is that these are often soldered to the motherboard, thus can not me removed by the average technician. This requires sending the mother board (at minimum) back to a service center with a tech that can solder-replace the chip. It is often lest costly to replace the board! 6: In the few cases that the chip is in a socket, it must be replaced, or at minimum removed, reprogramed, reinstalled. 7: Motherboard makers SHOULD have learned from the mess that USR had with their modems! These have flash upgradable ROMs in them, that: A: A bad batch died the after one or more (less than 6) updates! B: Around the same time, they stopped using sockets! The result was LOTS of dead modems! For the few that had sockets, the chips could be replaced in the field. For the majority of bad chips, that were soldered in, the modem had to be returned to the factory! In summery: Flash Upgradable is good, BUT needs a hardware button that must be pushed to enable upgrade! For motherboards, a connection to the rarely used any more "turbo" switch would at least allow it to be protected unless the system is in slow speed mode. Another missing feature would be to fall back to a small mini-bios until the flash it tested, THEN if it fails, look for a BIOS REPAIR disk in A:. It takes a lot less code for this and support of floppy read-only and minimum CGA level text output (for errors) that could be included in a MASK-ROM that switches out after the flushable is tested as OK. This would allow systems with good but misprogrammed Flash-BIOS to be fixed in the field. -- | [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jerel. --- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 06:07:57 +0100 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FTPMail, Agora, etc. statistics FTPMail, Agora, etc. statistics for Thu 15 Apr 1999, posted Fri 16 Apr, 06:06 GMT/BST Less than 1 hour [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1-4 hours None 4-10 hours None More than 10 hours None Response within 4 hours in at least 5 out of 7 recent tests [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] This data is generated automatically around 0600 GMT/BST most days.
