Mr. Boyd, you're making it sound worse than it is. How many people back
there knew the meaning of these terms? Not many and they were all of them
related in some way or another to computers.

If it means anything to you, I'm 22 years old and I know what a Winchester

After all someone may learn very fast how to use WWW by e-mail and why stay
for more then 1 1/2 year on this list (that me ;-)?
It will be boring just e-mail, just e-mail

According to the Internet statistics there are 2 kind of users: below 30 years
and over 30 years. The first are the surfers and the second are the content
hunting. So be it.

I think is plenty world for mainframe and PC users.

About programming, not long ago every man could fix his car, now is not
the same. Even so there always be some ... but better read this:

Subject: Do any web-to-mail servers allow exceptions to banned words?

Hello all,

        Does anyone know if any of the web-to-mail
servers, allow any exceptions to their banned 'word'
list? If I send a request to an admin. of say one
of the www4mail servers or a gopher explaining that
the site/image is not porn, would the forward the
doc.? Don't go and ask them, I will if nobody knows
and says so.

        Case in point: My cousin set up a sight for
his son, so family members can see pictures of the
baby. One of the pictures is called Nakedbaby.jpg
and is a standard baby on the rug shot (I think).
Because the file name has the word NAKED in it the
server bounces the request.

        Hypothetical: If I wanted to acess info
about West Essex a server might bounce it because it
conatains the word SEX. Also pages that refer to
"naked-eye" astronomy would get banned. I did get a
bounce on one of those before.

Us, digest readers have to wait for the digest to be released and then
jump inorder to get a chance to get first crack at an answer. I have
noticed the allowance of a few questions to slip through. It is great

 My guess would be that you loaded those pictures into RAM
inadvertantly and windows is SO stupid it doesnt know how to
unload them. SO if you just turn off your computer and restart
it you will be fine.

How to find the complete URL fo do an email search with the following search

I realize that doing an actual on-line (not my case) search from a browser

The URL you gave redirects you to net@address (usa.net) which is no
longer totally "free" (even though the signup page still says so.).
Members of this ist posted notices to the effect that some small monthly

Yes and no. Many of the E-mail only server sysadmins have contacted me
privately explaining the problems they have faced with users trying to
obtain "porn".

To name a few; the bellanet www4mail server, the emailfetch server, the
UK agora server, [EMAIL PROTECTED], etc. have all had problems with extreme
use mainly caused by trying to obtain "porn".

In fact, the new help file at [EMAIL PROTECTED] mentions this act specifically
as the reason for their changes.

All I can say is that you could ask the sysadmin explicity about some
site that may look like "porn" but isn't. However, I don't blame any of
them for restricting access either based on userids or site names. If
and when I get my own site for E-mail only access, I will do the same.

All I can say is from my viewpoint what I saw and participated in. When
I first learned computing (1964) I learned how to write code in 32-bit
strings of 0s and 1s -- machine language. Next I graduated to assembler,
Gotran (forerunner of Fortran), then Fortran, Cobol, CPS, Basic, PL/I,
IMS, CICS, DB/2, OS everything, Focus, C, and now C++. Most all of this
was on IBM mainframes, some GE time-sharing systems, an RCA Spectra 370,
and some CDC machines.

I swear that it appeared to me that everyone with whom I worked and
corresponded knew just about everything and kept up with changes. One of
the most memorable moments is June 1980 when I punched my last punched
card and got my own 3270 terminal -- heaven.

I know the one thing that still surprises me today is that when PCs
first started to arrive only 7 of us at work bought one. This was from a
staff of 258 system programmers, programmer-analysts, system analysts,
and other information specialists and managers. They all thought the 7
of US were crazy to be playing around with "toy" computers. I started
with an Altair kit, then an Imsai, then a TRS-80, then an IBM PC. This
lead to an interest in Basic, Assembler, Pascal, C, C++,
word-processing, databases and spreasheets.

Most if not all of these I have already "cracked" and provide a series
of wsxxx.faq files at my ftp site. About half of the ones I originally
worked with have been updated in Jan 99 whereas the others have not.
However, the wscrack.faq has also been updated. This document shows how
I went about developing the search strings for the various search
engines.

The main reason that I don't spend much time with these anymore is
because of the development of Getweb then the www4mail servers. These
two types of servers have just about eliminated the need for an agora
type search string.

However, if you want the files you can get them all in one zip file.
You can get the file by anonymous FTP at:
  ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wssearch.zip

Or by Agora, Getweb, or W3mail
  send ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wsearch.zip

Nothing wrong with you. This is a case of disappearing old files and new
names for old familiar listserv addresses.

The olf Arno Wouters files was around for ages and ages but has finally
been retired. The last update to the file was 5 Feb 94 but the ideas
contained in it were valid. However, due to the fact that so many of the
addresses had changed I guess the administrators decided to abandon this
old favorite file.

In addition, new list has moved from it's original site in North Dakota
to the Scout Project site at cs.wsic.edu. In addition, the listserv
address has changed.

I'm going to have to rewrite this section of the ACCMAIL FAQ to show
that this site is the home of NEW-LIST announcements.

Good question. Netscape OS/2 won't access and neither will Lynx. The
page is supposed to allow the user to select a non-shocked page but I
receive a message "badly formed address".

I think this is another in the long line of useless web pages designed
by clueless individuals. They assume everybody is running some Windows
version when accessing the web page.

You might address a note to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and see what
happens.

I have the same types of problems when I teach my C++ class. I get
questions like "Are we going to use the Internet?", "Do we use a mouse
to program?" "How come we have to type all these lines of code?", "I
thought C++ programming was like Visual Basic", "How come you make us
type all this code, can't we copy it from somewhere?" "Why do I have to
use these long variable names?", "Why do you make us comment the code?",
"Why does the code have to look pretty?"

I respond that in any major shop, 80% of the programming is maintenance,
not new development but alas nobody gets it.

The problem with PCs is that are every where so people think they are
like a VCR, TV, CD-Player, or a toaster. You just plug it in, turn it on
and you are ready to go. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to get
across the point that a PC is a very complicated and difficult piece of
electronic equipment and they are NOT easy to use. I don't think anybody
has ever installed a piece of software that was flawless in installation
or later use. Ditto for hardware, especially when you add a new device.

Examples:
#include <iostream.h>
int main()
{
   int a;
   cout << "Enter a: ";
   cin >> a;
   cout << "D is: " << a * 2 << endl;
   cout << "C is: " << 3.14159 * a * 2 << endl;
   cout << "A is: " << 3.14159 * a * a << endl;
   return 0;
}

Is this program intuitively obvious? Or the next one?

// Read radius of circle and print diameter, circumference, and
// area. Use integer for pi = 3.14159 in chapter 1.
#include <iostream.h>

int main()
{
   int radius, pi; // declarations for radius and pi as integers

   pi = 3.14159; // set value of pi, only know integers in Chp 1

   cout << "Enter radius of circle as an integer: ";
   cin >> radius;

   cout << "     Diameter is: " << radius * 2 << endl;
   cout << "Circumference is: " << pi * radius * 2 << endl;
   cout << "         Area is: " << pi * radius * radius << endl;

   return 0; // indicate that program ended successfully
}

This program confuses students no end. They can't seem to understand
that if we are using integers the value of pi really is 3. However, with
the comments, pretty code layout, and good variable names, the code
becomes understandable to anybody, not just programmers.

Well the wsmeta.faq is now somewhat out of date since go2net has redone
the site.

MetaCrawler is a World Wide Web search service developed in 1994 at the
University of Washington by Erik Selberg, Oren Etzioni and Greg
Lauckhart. It
is now operated by Go2Net, Inc., an Internet content and technology
company based in Seattle, Washington. In February 1997, Go2Net acquired
the MetaCrawler from its original developers and is focused on
continuously improving the service.

The string looks something like this now:
send http://search.go2net.com/crawler?general=[search phrase]\
&method=0&target=&region=0&rpp=20&timeout=5&hpe=10

The second page of results is like:
send http://search2.go2net.com/crawler?general=[search phrase]\
&method=0&sid=26512421search2_21_29&sno=42510&start=20\
&domainLimit=0&rpp=20&timeout=5&hpe=10&format=regular

The exact sid number(sid), start number(sno) etc. come from the first
set of results. start=20 shows to start at the second page of results
(usually, 1-20 is shown on the first page).

I haven't actually worked with the new strings...

ftp.online.be is not mirrored at funet.fi, hence no directory.

If you had sent a find request to [EMAIL PROTECTED] you would have
recieved
this:

> find frontpage98.arj
* Matching for regexpr: `frontpage98.arj'
* Found 0 matches.

If the file existed and was at a mirror site, then funet.fi would tell
you where it was located and you would place that address in the chdir
request. In almost all cases, the chdir command will look something
like:

chdir pub/mirrors/[mirrored ftp site name]/[mirrored path to
file]/[mirrored filename]

Accmailers,

Bad news. [EMAIL PROTECTED] has had another policy change and all
requests originating from dot-com and dot-net sites are denied.

So I guess I'll have to add this to the DEFUNCT list of servers.

Jeez, even I am now excluded when I was personally included. I'm
supposed to contact another person to find out what authority changes
can be made. Gads, this will be the 5th person I've dealt with at this
site in just 3 years.

The poor E-mail only user get the shafts again. I'm really get tired of
all this catering to web users. What about the rest of the world?

This is what I received back on 04Nov1998 from Robin B Parnes, the
Information Officer at SatelLife:
=============
Dear Gerry Boyd,

Thank you for your interest in SatelLife and for your reply! The
information you provided is exactly what I needed. I will update your
profile in the database in the near future. (I'll put in
programmer/teacher for profession, and no, I will not delete your
profile.)

I've never met Rolf, but I have heard good things about him. Thanks for
sharing that info. with me. If you have any questions, please do not
hesitate to let me know.

Regards,
Robin
==========================

Now I get this:
"For policy questions, I'd recommend talking to Leela McCullough, who
can
be reached at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. I don't personally have the
authority to change SatelLife policy, so talking to Leela is your best
recourse."
