Hi again, I know that this is now my third message in three days, but slowly but surely I'm getting the idea of this stuff. Now for the questions of the day: 1) Could somebody please tell me the active Archie servers? I tried to do something, but I got returned mail that the server wasn't found or something like that. 2) Same with Gopher servers? 3) Is anybody ever going to update the info you get from rtfm.mit.edu? It seems like everything that I try from there is wrong. Is there a more current FAQ somewhere else? Dragonlinux replaces the DOS command shell with the Linux kernal, it is not possible to return to dos from it, alt-ctrl-del, or shutdown is the only way out, so I think Dragonlinux is the one you want, and yes, it is multitasking. Send "search cactus" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You may want to narrow down the list search by adding more keywords. In case of the cactus you could try the exact latin expression also, for example "succulentia" or the like. -- Bye; Kai - [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kai Schindelka) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 13:39:34 +0200 From: Kai Schindelka <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: I Need A File [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Matt Bahls) on 23.04.1999: [I can't answer your main question] > > Also, how do I get off the Digest version of this list and on to the real > time version? This is from the help file (send "help" to the www4mail server to retrieve it): "XIMAGE (use one option line only!) This option will include links for images in a Web document sent as an attachment." This means that only the links to images are included in the requested files. If you want to get the picture itself, you will need to request it in a following message, therefore... > It is neccesary to give the complete path to the image? ...the answer to your question is yes. Keep all your request messages concerning a certain URL! That makes it easier to retrieve an update of a certain web page with all it's images included. In case you need to request those pictures again it will save you a lot of work. -- Bye; Kai - [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kai Schindelka) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 14:23:50 +0200 From: Kai Schindelka <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Off topic Gerald E. I learned in the past 5 months > many interesting things which are not always related to web-by-mail. Another motivation might simply be individualism. I could easily have full and unlimited access by just investing the equivalent of US$ 18 or so per month. I would get a full-blown, reliable service that way; there are at least five ISPs hanging around that would kiss my feet to be fed from my wallet. Instead I'm using a BBS e-mail account that costs US$ 2.50 per month and invest a little more of time and work. I have met quite interesting people that way, people who are less superficial as the main part of the point-and-click-does-the-trick community. The easiest way is not neccessarily the fulfilling one, I'd say. <g> -- Bye; Kai - [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kai Schindelka) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 16:30:03 +0200 From: Kai Schindelka <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Do any web-to-mail servers allow exceptions to banned words? Without knowing the contents of a specific site or a file the search for keywords ist the only way of restricting the access to offending parts of The Net. Since the filters have to use certain patterns for being able to work and fulfill their function, some "innocent" requests may be rejected depending on the density of the grid. This is an unwanted, but unavoidable side-effect. Simply avoid the most obvious porn related terms, like "naked", "sex" etc. In case of your astronomy search looking for "eye" and "astronomy" might give you the wanted results. [...] > Your cousin should think more carefully how he names files > to avoid such problems for his family. I agree. Filters are necessary for server owners for legal reasons. Allowing full access might result in the server being shut down by authorities in most countries, if provable illegal data was transferred. -- Bye; Kai - [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kai Schindelka) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 15:08:17 +0200 From: Kai Schindelka <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Join ACCMAIL [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Adim) on 21.04.1999: > "Do you want to know how to get the most out of Internet, just by > e-mail? > Subscribe to ACCMAIL, a mailing-list about using the Internet by > E-mail." > > This is what we can tell our friends, without being agressive (this > comes after reading Uzi's long message). Being a friend of mine, it would be the easiest way to get killfiled. I'm really getting tired of receiving spam like this, even if good will might be the motivation behind. I consider this aggressive, too. I think it is the words that are used in this case. I'm connected to the net - or subparts oft it, to be exact - since six or seven years, and all the time many so-called or even real friends stuff trash like this into my message box. "Do you know (how|that)...", "(free|cheap) [something]" and "(subscribe|click|goto|send|call|buy)" are the keywords that annoy me to no end. I think it is this yelling "hey, I know something you don't, and I intend to tell you even if you don't want to hear". Besides, in most cases there is actually money behind, and of course it is always yours going to be transferred to them. Another thing would be to mention a list like ACCMAIL in an individual, personal message. I really would appreciate hints or tips if only they were not yelled into my ear. I'm not that deaf, you know. So, a close friend of mine just telling me "I am subscribed to a mailing list that deals with accessing the Internet by mail, and I think it is quite good and readable" in a discussion about The Net in general would be all I need. I would then decide for myself if I'm willing to take a closer look, and if this is the case, I would know whom to ask for details. Do you get the point? Although I have learned a lot of things since I am on this list and I really like it, too, I am not going to spam my friends for that reason. Of course I will recommend it where it is appropriate and resonable, and because I am a system co-operator on a small BBS, I might even reach a few people... In Germany there is a saying that goes "The way one calls into the wood it is echoing from it", roughly translated. (Does anyone know the English equivalent, by the way?) Spread the word, I would say, but don't smash it into the face of others. Do it the polite way. -- Bye; Kai - [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kai Schindelka) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 17:31:29 EDT From: William C Andrews <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: JaVascript....
