Subject: Deja Power Search fun

Trying to make the Deja "Power Search" by mail function is lots of fun.
Not quite as much fun as having it work and advance my research project
but fine head scratching, puzzle type fun anyway. :-)

I can use the Forte Agent software to email a "Quick Search" to Agora, made up of
exactly the same search string that is produced in the address slot of the Deja
on-line web form when it's completed and the "Find" button clicked. This search works
fine and Agora mails back a positive response.

Trying to mail a "Power Search" string to Agora by a similar method though, only
brings an "Invalid URL" reply so far. I've tried both Gerald Boyd's "wsdeja.faq"
example search string and several of my own construction with the same negative
result.
I don't think there is a word wrap problem at this end, because my mail software is
configured to wrap at 999 characters. So, the problem seems to be related to the
structure of the search string itself.

If someone can assure me that they've managed to make it work, Ill be happy to
continue trying variations until it comes right. If not I'll probably keep working at
it anyway.:-)

TIA

Subject: POPing web-based email: Part 2

Most computer systems support user profiles with separate message stores so
that each user of the same computer can configure their own messaging
system. However home computer users (in my experience) usually do not
configure user profiles, and most cannot afford to have separate accounts
with an ISP for each family member / user. Also, the privacy of an
individual's mail is compromised.

Outlook Express 4 which I was using earlier could be configured for
different users, provided the computer was set up with user profiles.
However, OE5 has a feature called "Identities" which allows users to switch
the configuration _without_ setting up user profiles. Now each user can
have his own password-protected "identity" and corresponding mail folders,
connection settings, mail account configuration etc. Combined with the
integration offered with web-based email, one can now use a single internet
access account to provide completely separate mail systems to each user.

I understand OE5 for UNIX and the Mac is in the works.

You have surely tried to combine the parts into a usable whole? What
attempts did you make?

Obviously you will not get the file as a single attachment if you exceed the
www4mail limit of size per mail. However it is usually easy enough to "join
the pieces"; if you are using Windows, you could use the DOS *binary* join
at the MS-DOS command prompt after saving each attachment into a separate
folder:
copy /b part1 + part2 + part3 document.pdf

Some email programs have a "combine and decode" feature which will
automagically reconstruct the document, but this is not always reliable.

You could also try to get the document from a server which sends it as a
single attachment - that would be downloadslave.

If these are research papers, they might also be available on corresponding
ftp servers...

If the .pdf document is primarily text, you could use the pdf2txt service
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the URL in the body of the message) to
retrieve just the text of the document, but this will of course not help
with graphics.

Let us know how you solved the problem!

If you are referring to the Internet Mail product from Microsoft, it does
not support having the message store on non-local disks AFAIK. There may be
a hack which involves mapping the network disk to a drive letter and editing
a couple of registry entries - not recommended.

My vote goes in favour of including the stats in the postings.
I think every thing which is relevant to off-line internet access must be posted to
the list.
In my point of view the stats are worth posting to the list as they are relevant to
the ACCMAIL world. This is not a question of laziness at all. I want to see the
ACCMAIL docs in one list with one subscription.

You don't need to get whole .pdf file, for example, because
You can combine all parts of file and make whole file by special program.

It seems that if after reading the excellent FAQs you
still have questions, even the novice type, this should be the
place to ask them. What appears to be irritating is when it is
obvious that someone hasn't even tried the instructions. Post
your questions here then we all may learn a little more about
accessing the internet by e-mail. Besides, even a few "illegal"
questions slip in and are tolerated here from time to time, so
why should you need to be shy about questions for which this
list was intendid? Ask away and the subject will be discussed.

This message indicates that you are a member of Accmail or else you
couldn't post to the list. When you subscribed you are automatically
set up as a digest subscriber. That is, all messages for one day are
combined into one large message and sent out to the list about
midnight. If you want to receive individual postings as they are
approved to the list, then you must change your subscription. All of
this is explained in the message you received when you joined the list.
You did save it didn't you?

<QUOTE>
Please save this message for future reference, especially if you are not
familiar with LISTSERV. This might look like a waste of disk space now,
but in 6 months you will be glad you saved this information when you
realize that you cannot remember what are the lists you are subscribed
to, or what is the command to leave the list to avoid filling up your
mailbox while you are on vacations. In fact, you should create a new mail
folder for subscription confirmation messages like this one, and for the
"welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally
receive after subscribing to a new list.

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list,
just send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is called "sending mail
to the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV
makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) is also called the "list address". You must
never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed
to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the
"LISTSERV address", [EMAIL PROTECTED] It is very important to
understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not
complicated. The LISTSERV address is like a FAX number, and the list
address is like a normal phone line. If you make your FAX call someone's
regular phone number by mistake, it will be an unpleasant experience for
him but you will probably be excused the first time. If you do it
regularly, however, he will probably get upset and send you a nasty
complaint. It is the same with mailing lists, with the difference that
you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, so a
lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong number.

You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF ACCMAIL" command
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it
to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not
trust the system, send a "SET ACCMAIL REPRO" command and LISTSERV will
send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the
message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while
you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail
program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs
you that new mail has arrived from ACCMAIL. If you send a "SET ACCMAIL
ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement
instead, which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most
mail programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement
you can read later. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely
with "SET ACCMAIL NOACK NOREPRO".

Following instructions from the list owner, your subscription options
have been set to "DIGESTS NOACK REPRO NOCONCEAL" rather than the usual
LISTSERV defaults. For more information about subscription options, send
a "QUERY ACCMAIL" command to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a
list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX ACCMAIL" command
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can then order these files with a "GET
ACCMAIL LOGxxxx" command, or using LISTSERV's database search facilities.
Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV
reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD"
command to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Base64 - A file format using 64 ASCII characters to encode the 6-bit
binary data values 0-63. Identified by the following header:
"Content-Transfer-Encoding: base 64"

Base64 is a MIME type that uses mimencode to encode binary data using a
subset of ASCII.

Every accmailer should have a set of decoders: uudecode, xxdecode,

You send those 3000 votes to one e-mail address, with the subject yes
or no, you count the number of yes and no, and voila, you have a
counted vote. I could volunteer to do this, but I only have a 10 mb
mailbox, 3000 mail take a lot of space.

Or you could use a voting script, there should be someone here
which knows enough about perl to make one.

May you live long and spamless,

This is really strange, as I can work w/o any problems with downloadslave.com,
just with some bigger delays (prolly 'caus they're getting famous hehe)...

~ Thanks,

Take care,
Johannes

Just add a trailing "/' and all will be well if the page doesn't give a
specific file name and extension like index.html. By HTML standards,
the trailing "/' will force the default page to be sent to you.

Use this...
send http://www.riyad-bank.com/

For my index page you could send either of these requests:
send http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/
or
send http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/index.html

In the case of the page you specified the default is index.htm

Yes... Both export restricted and non-export restricted. For versions
outside the US, see the International PGP page for download
instructions. The reason I mention a web page is because PGP comes for
all platforms and in various languages. You have to use this page in
order to find the correct version.

Not me. This list is about Accessing the Internet by Email methods and
is not a list about "send me". We show how to do it for yourself, not
doing it for you.

Oooops. I think I may have a problem with Power Search (might have to
remove this section) Today I'm getting these errors from Bellanet:

"The function you requested is not implemented via this CGI."

Strange...

There certainly are such programs available.
To avoid international legal complications (and possibly imprisonment)
for yourself, I would suggest that you download the latest *international*
versions of the aformentioned program for yourself.
One of the sites at which all such programs are available is:

     http://www.pgpi.com/

You'll find all the details you like about whichever version that you
prefer.
The best of luck to you.

                                       Sincerely,

Hi folks,

I cannot think of a worse thing to happen than this! Is this M$'s idea
of "embracing and extending" established protocols?

Personally, it won't be long now before I move EVERYTHING over to Linux
- I hope that is people need to use HotMail, it'll offer proper
IMAP/SMTP and LDAP options, not its own crufty protocol set!

What Microsoft is now doing is not "cool", it's dangerous. It's also
probably very proprietary. Personally, I don't want to find myself
charged for every email message I send - I spend enough on phone bills.

I know of none that work this way, though I would like to. The best I
can think of is to use a server that allows you to set a 20K part size,
and select parts, then get only one part per day. 20K is really small!

}Is there a way of finding out or getting a list of all of the e-mail
}addresses at a certain host. For example I am trying to find out the
}e-mail address of somebody @x-stream.co.uk and I could work it out if I
had
}a list but how do I do that.
}

There was a way, but most systems have disabled it due to abuse by
SPAMmers for collecting addresses. If they post to usenet, then you may
find them in the RTFM address database, though hopefully in a format that
spammers software has trouble with. That is the same RTFM as stores the
US copy of the accmail FAQ. Check the help file.

If you nicely ask the postmaster at x-stream, giving the name that you
are looking for, then they may give you the address.

Wasn't there a whole FAQ on finding internet addresses?

}Also what exactly does the finger command do, I have tried e-mailing
}[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the command finger <e-mail address> but it
}keeps replying with the message "connection refused or host unknown"
Any
}help appreciated.

It requires a server program at the other end. The above message
indicates that there is no setver program for finger running on the other
site. You would likely get a similar answer if you attempted to finger
me.

Have I missed something? What is HTTPMail? If it's from Microsoft it's
bound to be crap

Subject: "Outlandish" search engines

I recently discovered a search engine oriented to Web sites in a
particular country, of whose language I understand only a few words. In
line with a hobby interest, I used one of those words as a search term
and found a reference to an English-language page among the first ten
links. It turned out to be remarkably useful.

I wonder if it might be a good list topic to discover foreign search
engines.
