Subject: Mac decompression utilities?

Gidday all,

I have Stuffit Expander 4.0.1 and it has served me well in the past. I had
access to a 'DOS Machine' so I could unzip files when I needed to. Now, I
find I can't and Stuffit Expander doesn't unzip unless you install the
DropStuff Expander.

I visited, by e-mail, Aladdin's Web site (after searching for DropStuff
with one of the search engines by e-mail) and *eventually* found some info
about it -- but it is shareware costing $30.00 which you have to pay before
downloading it.

Question.
=========
Is there a public domain decompression program/suite available? Better
still is there an FTP site that 'houses' mac programs? There may be some
other gems out there.

Subject: Help reg a free FTP client

Hello Folks,

I tried downloading

<ftp://ftp.ipswitch.com/ipswitch/product_downloads/WS_FTPLE.exe, a free
FTP client called WS_FTP LE (Limited Edition).......could get all six
parts, but, Part 04 of 06 got accidentally deleted. I tried a couple of
times the following,

send ftp://ftp.ipswitch.com/ipswitch/product_downloads/WS_FTPLE_exe.004

but each time I got a message "Error 405 - The remote server may be
busy or the file name or path is wrong".

Please help me to get this missing part. Also please suggest how I can
combine all the six parts, before attempting to delploy the file.

I wish to point out that for dial up connections, the Eudora
(either Eudora Pro releases upto 3.x , or Eudora Light rel.1.x.(16))
can connect either through Winsock (which is TCP/IP) or through
Dial Up Shell Account Access. The latter access is what I have and it is
called the "e-mail only" access by my service provider. For this
type of access, the e-mail generated by a browser for a form obtained
from a www4mail server has to be put into Eudora, before mailing it
back to that www4mail server. I believe novices may feel a missing
link here - an obvious question being how the mail is transferred from
the browser to Eudora; and I suppose similar cases arise with other
similar e-mail programs for non-TCP/IP connections. I hope the
following would be useful for all those .

With IE4 that I have, in the settings dialog obtained via Menu
commands -> View -> Folder Options , tab -> Programs, the programs
for Mail can be chosen. If I choose Eudora Pro for this - then when I
browse a form obatined from a www4mail with IE4 and click "submit" or
(the likes) or the "Get Selected Document(s)" button, I get only
a *blank* message in Eudora Pro. I have not found any reason why the
IE4 / Eudora Pro combination should be so failing !

But fortunately two other choices for IE's mail program work for me -
Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger. In both cases the IE4 browser
generated message for sending back to the appropriate www4mail
server can be copied - (from "Outbox" in the case of OE and "Unsent
Messages" folder in case of N-S Messgenger) and then pasted onto
Eudora mail ;the message can then be sent to the correct www4mail server,
with our own subject header). In both cases, OE or N-S
Messenger, should be forced to be local (that is offline).

One good thing about so copying and sending the message is, we
can also look at the contents of the generated messages and get some
insight - especially in case of messages for search pages, as parameters
for search string are easily identifiable from the browser's reply
message to www4mail. (In case of Google.com I learnt about the useful
&start parameter this way, further to the &num, &sa parametrs on which
Frits Westra posted a very useful info. to this list few days back)

Dear Alexander:

Once you know the Fidonet address, it is indeed possible to send an Internet
e-mail message there.
Let us say that you want to send a e-mail message to Ivan Pushkin whose
Fidonet address is 1:2/3.4
The syntax of your e-mail message would be:

TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It occurs to me that you might also want to send an e-mail message to some
other network besides Fidonet.
If you ever do wish to do so, there is a definitive online manual on how to
send to those other networks.
The relevant Internet addresses are:

http://alabanza.com/kabacoff/Inter-Links/cgi/inmgq.pl
ftp://ftp.csd.uwm.edu/pub/internetwork-mail-guide

The best of luck to you in your cross-network communications.

                                       Sincerely,

Commands to www4mail:
send URL -- convert to ASCII and send back as plain text
get URL -- convert to ASCII and send back as plain text
get source URL -- retrieve the original unmodified HTML source in the
body
source URL -- same as get source
URL -- retrieve modified web page as an attachment
tsource URL -- retrieve the original unmodified HTML source as an
attachment using MIME
xsource URL -- retrieve the original unmodified HTML source in the body

All I normally use is "send URL" and "URL"

I don't know any free Mac program which will unzip -- but DropStuff
with Expander Enhancer is cheap for what it does.

The prime Mac software archive is Info-Mac (public domain, freeware,
shareware and demos). There are indeed plenty of gems there. The New
Zealand mirror is at <ftp://ftp.vuw.ac.nz/info-mac/> (Chris
Bannister's email address is in New Zealand). A full list of the
mirrors:

Superb answer. I never remotely imagined that from the original
question that an explanation of how to use your email client program
should be considered. I just took the question at face value, that is.
"how can email only users of the net do that?" Easy I thought, but I'd
guess I was wrong about that -- so am sorry about "peeve" mode answer.

Hi Accmailers,

When Outlook users send me email attachments, I get the message (on Outlook
Express) but at first sight no attachment. But the message is obviously much
bigger that just the message alone would be, so the attachment(s) must be
there somewhere. Questions:
1. Why does this happen?
2. What can I do on my side to extract the attachment(s)?
3. What can the Outlook user do?

Your help will be much appreciated.

This address is intended to be used from juno, to prevent juno from
tacking on their NAG-LINE text to the bottom of the message. (One of a
group of 4 line tags advertising juno.com) It just dumps whatever is
sent it to a bit bucket. The addresses existence in To: or Cc: is what
will do the trick. It is a common CC: for messages sent to accmail
servers or to mailing lists. It is not needed for THIS list due to the
name "listserv" in the posting addresses.

Highly unreliable. The following methods work on SOME mail clients, but
rarely both on the same client:

<http://rtfm.mit.edu/usenet/>

<A http://rtfm.mit.edu/usenet/> click here to get to the usenet FAQs </A>

It will never work for, as example, juno version one users, as they have
no dirrect http access. It will work for less than 5% of all juno users
regardless, for the same reason.

accmail users often do not have direct http access.

If your quoted text did not kill too many users accmail digests, then so
far, so good. This is like the "begin ###" headers for streight
UU-encoded stuff.

You need a MIME decoder. The DOS uudeview tends to work with anything I
toss it short of damaged data. It is a bit slow. uudwin (a windows 3
version of uudview) also exists.

If you do not yet have a UU decoder, you will likely want to get a
bootstrap version of that first, to get past thev "How do I decode the
decoder?" problem. MUUD is the most common, but has trouble with SOME
systems. DEBUG scripts and basic programs to create a uudecode.com or
uudecode.exe are a more reliable method.

The FAQ shows ways to get MUUD, but I need to update my copy to check if
the others are listed.
