Without any GETSIZE command, your 3.9 MB file should then be splitted in 19 200K chunks, plus a 20th one about 193K large. In order not to overflow your mailbox (the 20 chunks are likely to be sent in a few minutes only), you may use the GETPART command which allows you to retrieve any part of the file. For example : GETPART 1-10 your file address to retrieve the 10 first chunks. HTH Claude. [Sent to Accmail and Help-Net] On Monday, Gerry Boyd sent an email stating that the emailfetch.com services appeared to be defunct. Well, they appear to be at least partially refunct again, because I have successfully sent and received a response for an URL from [EMAIL PROTECTED] (don't know about any of the other services though). Seems to have just been a temporary and unexpected downtime. -- Johnathan Walde, 7572 - Darn American spellchecker. Whaddya mean, Poutine's not a word? Show is over, eh. I too received a reply this morning but I posted my message after contacting the owner of the site who had this to say: "With Linux Redhat 5.2, things have been going from bad to worse. Right now the system is virtually down. I will be trying to rebuild using the old OS. If and when this comes up, I'll let you know." So I warned people that the site might possibly be defunct until I received confrimation that it was back up and running. However, I received no confirmation until this morning when I unexpectedly recieved a request that I had sent. -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 11:40:09 -0700 From: "Gerald E. GET is only used on HTTP sites for retrieving files from www sites. The ftp sites require a different syntax. See http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/howto1.html for details and examples. # [use as separator if you want more that one file retrieval] Split=0 [use 0 if you want to receive one large file - default is 27Kb] Name= [Subject title that you want returned in your email message] Type= [9 for binary, 0 for text file, 1 for directory listing] Port=70 [default gopher port] Path=ftp:[Name]@/[Path]/[File] [where Name is ftp site name, Path is file path, File is the filename you wish to retrieve] Host= [gopher site that supports file transfers] -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 18:18:59 +0000 From: "McDade, Christopher" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Back to submitting forms hmm.. this problem keeps coming back to haunt us. If you read the WWW4Mail help file, it states that using IE will probably not work with their forms. I have enclosed the relevent text here. XBYJS (use one option line only!) Some Web browsers are not capable of transmitting data by e-mail, e.g., MS-IE v3.0. This problem usually shows up after you check the links that you would like to retrieve and select the "Get Selected Document(s)" button. What you get is that your mail program opens a new message with the address of the www4mail server appearing and the body of the message blank. You can use the XBYJS option to work-around this problem provided you are using a JavaScript compatible browser. Note: This work-around tries to fill in the Subject: line automatically instead of the message body needed by www4mail. But if you notice that the Subject: line is blank, you will need to cut out all characters starting from the ? sign in the To: field and paste them in the Subject: line manually. Or alternatively use a better package like Netscape to browse HTML pages!! Netscape works fine with these forms. Actually, there is a brand new command at the Trieste wwww4mail server. Clement Onime just installed it. XFORMREPLY=text The server will send you a text version of the HTML FORM, which you can fill as text and return by mail. For more details send a mail to server with the following in the body help xformreply This command works on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] server. -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 23:07:12 +0200 From: Frits Westra <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Search Engines by Email Not Appropriate for Business Finders Hello Kamram, You may want to try the below search strings for your queries. Yahoo -- when I'm clueless and need a category. This should only be used for this purpose, not to find something directly. Example "nntp" AltaVista - when I think the answer is at an educational site or I want to constrain the search by host, domain, or url, or type or really narrow down on something. Inference - when I have a big long search string like "bubbles in the liquid created light" Google - Been using this a lot since March and might replace Inference as my favorite. Good for 1 or 2 word searches. Example: "DSL experiences" HotBot - When I want a literary document as a result. Also used to constrain searches by type of file -- image, audio, Javascipt, VRML, etc. Snap.com -- A newer and better Yahoo Fast Search - this is a fairly new engine. I been using it for a couple of months. It is fast but unfortunately it doesn't have many commands to sift out the junk. I'm really trying to get a handle on how to use it better. FTPsearch -- when I want to find a file on an ftp site and I know most of its name. Example: ftpmail to find ftpmail-1.25.tar.gz (source code for ftpmail). Foldoc - when I want a definition of a computer term. Webopedia - When I want a definition of a computer term and some links. Merriam-Webster - when a want a definition of an American (English) word SimtelNet - when I want a piece of DOS software C\Net shareware - when I want to find a Windows program DejaNews - when I want to find an old Usenet posting or the learn what a Usenet newsgroup specializes in. Liszt - when I want to find a mailing list. and more and more.... See my web page for all the ones I use: http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/search.html -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ End of ACCMAIL Digest - 11 Aug 1999 to 12 Aug 1999 (#1999-225) **************************************************************
