2.6.16-rc4 unfortunately doesn't make a difference either.

To the contrary: once I booted, saw the nobody cared message together with the 
traceback, then the rest of the boot messages and finally at the login prompt 
the machine hang hard: no Shift-PgUp, no SysRq, nothing. No console message 
appeared either. Could not reproduce that hang though.

The hardware ran fine for years, so if it is a hardware flaw it must have 
developed in the last few weeks which I deem rather unlikely.

I attached a new dmesg output from 2.6.16-rc4 exhibiting the bug to the 
bugzilla 
page.
