sorry about the late reply, and mixing in other problems i had with the
original post.

aspm has nothing to do with it for me, and everything i noticed happening could
be explained by only _X_ being nonresponsive during backlight changes, not the
entire computer, and it was never a lock up, just temporary unresponsiveness
while the backlight was doing a fading trick of some sort.

i've always had very weird things happen with linux when i've got little free
memory and things like X are candidates for being swapped out a bit. willing to
bet this is just an artifact of that.

to reiterate, the initial bug was never about a permanent freeze.
