In the Active4D documents there is an example regular expression pattern like this:

$pattern := "|^(http://)?([^/]+)(/4dcgi)?([^?]+)(\?)?(.*)|i"

In this example, I notice the use of the "|" (pipe) around the pattern. Is this an A4D specific thing?

In other languages I've seen "/" used and note that some Active4D examples also use this? The PHP docs that the Active4D documents reference don't seem to use that syntax and only refer to the "|" as an alternation meta-character?

Does using "|" as the pattern boundary have special meaning?

Thanks,

Brad Perkins
