This begs a question... Why shouldn't we put apache and 4D's built in web server in the same category? I understand Apache is open source, why don't 4D just implement it inside 4D?
Probably because when 4D started providing built-in web serving, they were supporting OS 9, on which apache did not run.
why don't 4D just implement it inside 4D?
"*just* implement it"? It isn't a matter of "just" doing anything. Integrating apache into 4D on multiple platforms is not a trivial task. Software sounds so wonderfully easy on paper. Hey, it's just typing! But we all know how hard it is in reality.
