You will have a PDC emulator as one of your FSMO roles even after you go to
Native mode. As you say, this is to support down rev clients and domains.
All non Win2K clients that do not have the DS client add-in will be unaware
of any of the AD sites that you have configured and will all go to the PDC
emulator for authentication.

The service is still running to allow for other clients to validate. I
forget the service name but it will allow connections even in native is my
understanding. We currently have DOS boot disk we use boot machines and do
diskless installs. Works fine for us. I use a Win98 boot disk with the
TCP/IP stack for connection. We are not in Native as of yet.
