We only have two domains (had 10 but removed unneccessary ones. Need these two though) - we are going to have one forest and have these two domains. We are going to do a migration (tested worked with only minor issues) and have our OU's by dept. (we went back and forth on this)
We will eventually install exchange 2000 with exchange conference server on another. (buying two machines - already have specs for these) We were going to go with integrated Dns - making both machines DCs and DNS servers - (these machines will be for domain1 - domain2 will be NT for a short time but will be upgraded. At that time, they will get new boxes.) I am writing up the proposal and need to recommend some hardware - not sure with these ideas in mind what is a good box to buy or anything I should incl. I finally got the go ahead on getting AD in our environment. I was thinking to start - to get two compaq DL360 18 gig hds (mirrored). making both machines dcs and dns. eventually get another server for exchange 2000. What do you think? good start? ------ Well those are two fine bits of kit for sure but when you say newbie what do you mean? And when you say "starting out" what do you mean? Have you assessed what you have already to decide how to collapse it into one domain - I'm assuming you are thinking just one domain because you don't want any less than two domain controllers in a domain. Have you identified any "blocking issues" with the migration? Are there any things about your network that with hindsight should have been done differently? And are you allowing your chance to exercise the benefit of that hindsight during the AD migration? I don't even think about what actual bits of metal I'm going to use to run the AD on - at least not in that sort of detail where I've got something picked out of the catalogue - until I know what my AD looks like. And I don't know that until I know what business problem I'm trying to solve. Rob Moir -- This e-mail is intended for the addressee shown.
