Brandon,

I've seen MMC issues that were caused by third party apps.  You should pick one of the DCs to t-shoot on.  On that DC try disabling third party services or removing apps one by one.  Try opening the MMC after disabling a service or removing an app until you are able to pinpoint the cause.  I've seen norton antiv corp edition 7.6 cause the processor to run at 100% after opening the dsa.msc, so if you are running it you may want to start troubleshooting by removing it. Look for common apps that exist on all the DCs.

Yep - OK - I can understand that then.

Can you install AdminPak on a Win2k Pro or WinXP, and then do the maint from there?  An MMC issue can be very tough to track down, and it sounds like you need to get this done now.

Rick,

Thanks for the suggestion, but it still is not working. I tried to run the MMC /A from Start->Run and the window still closed on me. I am trying to add a site directly from the DC. When you create a new site it creates the site and is supposed to create a folder under the site named "Servers". Then when you run DCPromo it puts the server into the "Servers" folder under the newly created site. If that "Servers" folder does not exist then DCPromo or the move will fail. Any other suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brandon

Brandon,

This sounds to be a problem with MMC, which does have a few problems (putting it mildly).  If you run MMC /A from Start->Run and then add the snap-in for AD Sites and Services, (provided you've added the AdminPak for SP3 - you HAVE applied the AdminPak for SP3, right?  This also assumes you're not doing this directly from the DC, which means you don't have to install the AdminPak) as a piece within a new MMC console.

Also, just to make sure there is no misunderstanding - servers do not magically appear in sites when a site is created.  You must create the site, associate subnets and protocols / transports with the site, then move a DC to that site.

As to the issues that you're having with MMC - yes - I've seen it often.

All,

I am trying to add a new site within AD and every time I add a new site with in AD Sites and Services the MMC window completely closes. I open it back up and the site is created, but the server container underneath it is not created. This happens on several DC's within in AD. When I try and create anything with in AD Sites and Services the MMC window closes. I have rebooted and reloaded SP3 and I am still having the same problem. Has anyone else run into this problem and if so how did you fix it?

Thanks for Your Help,

Brandon
