Ntbackup can restore to different hardware, as long as the HAL and the
boot/system disk letters are the same.

Even if you are using backup software other than NTBackup, schedule
NTBackup to create a nightly backup to a file on your DC. Use your tape
backup software to back this file up to tape.

To restore to dissimilar hardware:

1. Install base OS
2. Install your tape backup software
3. Restore the NTBackup file from tape
4. Restore system from NTBackup file
5. Fix boot.ini (if the partition scheme doesn't match the original).

It occurs to me that what might be workable, at the cost of an
additional OS license, would be to run the actual DC in a virtual
machine on top of a member server. Restoring the VM to dissimilar
hardware is trivial.

Absolutely. But how does that help me with domain controller restore? I
don't have a problem with the installation of the operating system, it's
the restore to unlike hardware that's a problem once I put back the
domain controller information.

I could use IFM but that expects that I have an existing DC to replicate
with which I may not. I could use ASR, but I still need like hardware
(same number of processors, some of the lower drivers the same etc.)
which is not completely what I'd consider 'other' hardware.

ADS is nice for deployment of a large amount of servers. Sadly, it
doesn't yet support workstations which really puts a damper into the
idea of consolidation. Great for an ASP that wants a framework, but not
so much for a corporate enterprise that's trying to reduce the amount of
servers.

Have you thought about looking into using ADS?

Identical hardware then?

The machine was a member server with the TSM client installed. Ran a
restore and rebooted, brought back registry, and backup made it a DC
with info at time of backup. It replicated and was good.
