If I remember.... have you gone into the 'client for Microsoft Networks'
and set password synch on the W98? I haven't got a machine to verify it
with here but I think it was an option.

That's a known issue, but I can't remember what's known about it ;)
Seriously, I believe its an issue with the network password hash algorythm
used - something like NTLM v2 is used by default, which 9x client's can't
do
without the ADClient.
It also could be related to the setting for client/server packet signing -
but I seem to remember it was the NTLM issue. I'm pretty sure its in the
archives.
