FWIW, GPUpdate replaced secedit on Windows XP when XP was released as well.

If you remember under Windows 2000, when you made a group policy change you could enforce it immediately using the /refreshpolicy switch on the secedit command. Much to my dismay I found out this morning that doesn't work under Windows 2003 - they've replaced that switch with the GPUpdate.exe command line utility.
