If that was true then why would it work for a few weeks and then just stop
cold?

Also I will check and see if some how my anti-spyware has killed it some how
... (now where did I put that test bed for windows xp)

It's just a MMC pop up that I can tell. I don't see any Active X now that
I've launched it here and reminded myself what it looks like.

Me thinks some mmc dll got horked maybe?

I don't use that console that much because if I remember right you can't
wack off printers connecting [not that I've ever seen anyway] and it tends
to draw a small screen which screws up the icons on my servers desktops [I
tend to yank out stuff like services, event viewer and the like.
