You can also try out EditPlus: www.editplus.com which is a shareware editor that works well for Perl. It isn't a full-blown IDE, but it is extendable.
You can run the Trial version as long as you want, it just nags you to pay for it. The price for it is: 1-user license: US $30 5-user license: US $125 ($25 each) 10-user license: US $200 ($20 each) 20-user license: US $360 ($18 each) 30-user license: US $450 ($15 each) 50-user license: US $600 ($12 each) 100-user license: US $800 ( $8 each) Which as far as software goes, is pretty cheap... -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Sandeep Deshpande Sent: Friday, December 02, 2005 4:05 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Good Free Perl IDE? Dear Eric, Thanks for the reminder. I am still evaluating these free packages, it is a time consuming job because it takes decent time to understand all the functionalities of each IDE. However meanwhile let me share my observations with all of you. All these observations are very much subjective and I would like thanking every one who has shared their experiences. Our ActivePerl mail-list has recommended following packages. 1) Open Perl IDE (http://open-perl-ide.sourceforge.net/ ) :- This is a very good IDE, you can 'execute', 'Debug', 'Step into/over' with your script. It doesn't have facility of 'Word-Wrap' and hence you need to scroll horizontally every time you come across a big command line/comment. You get 'compile' and 'run' options ready on the Menu Bar. This seems to be very much User friendly. Any Perl Newcomer can use this IDE easily. One can assign different colors to variables, Comments etc. I have decided to use this IDE as of Now. 2) Epic Editor (http://e-p-i-c.sourceforge.net/ ) :- It requires download of Eclipse which is a very big file and hence I am Not able to download it yet. 3) Context (www.context.cx ) :- This one is also Good IDE. However I don't use it because it requires lot of setting to run a sript. I am Not able to find 'Debug' option in this IDE. It has 'Word-Wrap' option. However I think this IDE could be useful for multilingual programmers/groups. David has been using this IDE for Perl development since past 4 years and hence I think I need to explore it more so that I can provide real justice to it. However initially it doesn't seem to be as User-friendly as Open Perl IDE. 4) Vim (www.vim.org/download.php ) :- This is a good Editor. Since I work on Unix also, I haven't found any problem using 'vim' on Windows. It accepts all the 'vi' editor commands. It is interesting to work on this editor, although it is Not IDE, I love working on 'vim' also. But if you want IDE then 'vim' is Not a good solution. 5) UltraEdit (http://www.ultraedit.com ):- This is Not Free Editor, however I would like to thank Foo ji-Haw for recommending it. I haven't tested it's trial version. 6) scintilla/Scite (www.scintilla.org ) :- Only day before yesterday Joseph has suggested it and I haven't downloaded it. After you've evaluated them all, could you post a brief note listing the ones you tested, indicating which one you chose, and why it was the one you went with? I'm considering PerlBuilder's IDE (which I used briefly a few years back) but if there's something free that gives pretty much the same functionality and installs easily and reliably, I'll likely go with that instead. At least for now. -Eric Sandeep Deshpande wrote: Dear Gurus, I would like to thank all of you for your suggestions. Currently I have downloaded most of the free packages suggested in this forum and I am testing those. I would like to thank all of them who have suggested me paid-IDEs also, but since we are going to use IDE for a team of 12 programmers, we can Not invest in 10-12 licenses and hence I prefer 'Free of Cost' IDE. Dear All, Could somebody suggest me a good Perl IDE for Windows 2000, which comes 'FREE of COST' (Not trial versions). <snip> Sandeep, Eclipse http://www.eclipse.org/ and E-P-I-C Perl plugin will get you what you need. I have used Eclipse for about 3 years now...it is an excellent product and the libraries of plugins that are available is astounding. Also, I think the E-P-I-C plugin now has an integrated debugger, but I've never used it... The only hitch is, you'll need Java JDK 1.4.2_03 or better to get it working... hth, adym _______________________________________________ ActivePerl mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe: http://listserv.ActiveState.com/mailman/mysubs _______________________________________________ ActivePerl mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe: http://listserv.ActiveState.com/mailman/mysubs -- Eric S.
