So had I! I needed something like this to kick off and control compile processes on remote machines for our release process. I found several "solutions" in the WEB, the Resource Kit etc. but none really did all I needed. The best I got was when I could remotely exec a BATch file which starts and controls the compile process, limited to run in the background without visible window and depending on the application unable to redirect STDOUT. :-(( In the end I wrote a PERL script that implements a Socket Service forking a shell to exec the batch, whose output is directly sent to the caller via network. This RCMD Service works nice and stable since about 6 months. I'll try to put the main parts together (the Server) and some example of how to use it tomorrow, but as I will be out of office till wednesday, it might be that I can post it next week.
