Her answer was right but the answer "program your own" was definitely a snotty answer.
My question was "what inexpensive log analyzer should I buy?" and not "could you please tell me if I should program my own application or buy one"? I could sit down and start a whole project for a nifty log analyzer but that's not on my agenda and I'm looking to buy somebody's solution, because it would be cheaper + pay somebody for his work. Next time somebody asks how to enhance an ASP script with Javascript, the same person should advise him to go see a movie instead. -----Original Message----- From: Robert Swiger [mailto:rswiger@;tcrh.org] Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 10:38 AM To: ActiveServerPages Subject: RE: Good inexpensive log analyzer? Diane, That was a snotty answer, actually. It's always cheaper to buy a $50 of $100 piece of software than spending 10 or 20 hours or more developing it plus it provides job to others. -----Original Message----- From: Diane Schips [mailto:ASPInfo@;MainshipSystems.com] Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 10:17 AM To: ActiveServerPages Subject: RE: Good inexpensive log analyzer? If you needed a good editor, and Word were too expensive (which MS seems to be moving toward), then you might consider writing your own. Especially since you would tailor it to your needs and not need to try to make it as general as Word needs to be. People make suggestions here in good faith. Maybe a suggestion is made by someone coming from a different perspective than you are, but that's no reason for a rude response from you. If the suggestion isn't helpful, a simple "thank you but" is sufficient. BTW - are you considering the cost of the time you're spending looking for a system that meets your needs? Have you considered how much time it would actually take to develop what you're looking for? I'm planning on writing my own analyser in the near future. My webhost uses one I don't like. But maybe my needs are simpler than yours. Yes, I guess I can also write my own text editor and trash Word, and also write my own email client and trash Outlook. Or buy a software which would cost my company less than the time spent developping such an app. Thanks for the input. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:psayers@;kentcountyarc.org] Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 9:21 AM To: ActiveServerPages Subject: RE: Good inexpensive log analyzer? Import the logs into access or sql on daily/weekly/monthly basis (depending on how you have setup the logging to start each new log file) Then write your own analyzer, splitting strings...and you can link to excel to do pivot tables...and some cool analysis stuff. -----Original Message----- From: Nicolas Verhaeghe [mailto:nicolas@;busride.com] Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 11:17 AM To: ActiveServerPages Subject: Good inexpensive log analyzer? We do not wish to pay the huge rip-off price of Web Trends and are looking for an inexpensive and easy to set up log analyzer with unlimited number of servers. WebLog Expert looked like a good choice at first but it keeps on reprocessing the log files all the time, unless we remove them from the folder. No Fast Trends-like feature yet apparently. What would you recommend for less than a $100? A log analyzer which also parses the query string would be great but we can live without this feature.
