Sorry, I thought that your answer was rather snotty. If you can find what
you want for $50-$100 - and I'm not saying you can't - then but it. The buy
it vs. write it yourself question is a non-issue to me. It's sort of like
asking which is the better color, green or blue. It would depend on who you
are and what you're doing.

But if you're going to ask a question of this list, be considerate of the
people who respond. Sarcastic responses to people who are trying to help
are not appreciated.

Until the possibility of your writing a log analyzer yourself was made, no
one could know if that was as reasonable option for you. It isn't, and
that's all that needed to be said.

Diane

Diane,

That was a snotty answer, actually.

It's always cheaper to buy a $50 of $100 piece of software than spending
10 or 20 hours or more developing it plus it provides job to others.

If you needed a good editor, and Word were too expensive (which MS seems
to be moving toward), then you might consider writing your own.
Especially since you would tailor it to your needs and not need to try
to make it as general as Word needs to be.

People make suggestions here in good faith. Maybe a suggestion is made
by someone coming from a different perspective than you are, but that's
no reason for a rude response from you. If the suggestion isn't
helpful, a simple "thank you but" is sufficient.

BTW - are you considering the cost of the time you're spending looking
for a system that meets your needs? Have you considered how much time
it would actually take to develop what you're looking for? I'm planning
on writing my own analyser in the near future. My webhost uses one I
don't like. But maybe my needs are simpler than yours.

Yes, I guess I can also write my own text editor and trash Word, and
also write my own email client and trash Outlook.

Or buy a software which would cost my company less than the time spent
developping such an app.

Thanks for the input.

Import the logs into access or sql on daily/weekly/monthly basis
(depending on how you have setup the logging to start each new log file)
Then write your own analyzer, splitting strings...and you can link to
excel to do pivot tables...and some cool analysis stuff.

We do not wish to pay the huge rip-off price of Web Trends and are
looking for an inexpensive and easy to set up log analyzer with
unlimited number of servers.

WebLog Expert looked like a good choice at first but it keeps on
reprocessing the log files all the time, unless we remove them from the
folder. No Fast Trends-like feature yet apparently.

What would you recommend for less than a $100? A log analyzer which also
parses the query string would be great but we can live without this
feature.

Thanks in advance!
