Joshua, I was amazed to read that this was your most controversial policy.
Were animal lovers incensed that they could not bring their pets to campus? As
I noted in my message to the larger group, with a couple of notable exceptions,
we did not have much push back. When the policy was first adopted, we did have
one faculty member who was up in arms. Ironically, he was a prime mover in our
development of the policy. He was a biologist (!) who felt it was his right to
bring his two very large dogs to campus (and into a science building where lab
animals were kept). His departmental colleagues could not reason with him on a
scientific basis--apparently he felt that his dogs could not possibly do
anything so mundane as carry germs. He threatened to leave, and eventually he
did. No one was unduly saddened!

The second instance was a faculty member in the humanities who asserted that
her dog was a comfort dog, essential to her well-being. At that time, our
policy required that owners produce evidence of training, and of course she had
none. The dog in question was a basenji. They don't bark, but this one made
sounds like a child crying whenever she left him in her office. It drove
others in the department crazy and eventually she was informed of the
university policy. She set upon the Provost's Office relentlessly but
unsuccessfully, trying to get the policy changed or to get an exception. This
was in 2001, right after 9/11, and of course we had other things to do. Over
time, it became clear that she was something of a nut case (many instances of
abusive and bizarre behaviors). She too left KU eventually, and once again to
no one's regret!

Hope you and yours are doing well and that you are not buried in snow.

Jeannette

Hi, Lynda,

Here is Cornell’s policy:

Good luck—this was our most controversial policy to date. I hope you don’t
have as much furor over it as we did.

Joshua

Subject: [acupa-l] Seeking Policy regarding Animals on Campus

Hello,

Our institution is developing a policy to ban animals on campus. This, of
course, does not pertain to Service Animals – we have a separate policy for
that. Does anyone have a stand-alone policy banning “non-service animals on
campus” that they would be willing to share?

Thank you,
