Hello,
At GVSU we offer household member benefits. Under the Household Member program,
a GVSU faculty/staff member who does not already enroll a spouse in the health
or other benefit plans may enroll one adult individual for benefit coverage but
only if all of the following eligible criteria are met:

• The faculty/staff member is eligible for GVSU’s benefits
• The Household Member, at the time of proposed enrollment, resides in the same
residence as the faculty/staff member and has done so for the previous 18
continuous months, other than as a tenant.
• The Household Member is not a “dependent” of the employee as defined by the
IRS.

Children of a Household Member are also eligible for this benefit if they are
members of the faculty/staff member’s household and meet IRS dependent criteria
as well as university dependent coverage policy (up to age 19, or while a
student).

Subject: RE:[acupa-l] Employee benefits for same sex couples

At Indiana University, our tuition benefits do extend to registered same-sex
domestic partners and their children:

Spouse and Domestic Partner Eligibility
Covered dependents include the legal spouse as defined by marriage law in the
state of the employee’s residence or registered same-sex domestic partner of an
individual described in the Eligibility section above; or of a deceased
employee or Retiree who was eligible at the time of death.
Dependent Child Eligibility
Covered dependent children include the biological or adopted child, stepchild,
or a child whose legal guardian is an eligible individual, or of an eligible
spouse or registered same-sex domestic partner, or a child of a deceased parent
or legal guardian who was an eligible employee at the time of death (provided
the child was a legal dependent at the time of the parent or guardian's death),
and on the first day of the session for which tuition benefit is being sought.

Subject: Employee benefits for same sex couples

Good morning, all…any input you care to share will be very helpful.

We received inquiries regarding Staff Scholarship Guidelines for same-sex
partners and dependents. Our educational scholarship benefits are extended to
employees and their dependents.

UNT’s nondiscrimination policy statement says “The University of North Texas
does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or
ethnic origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or
expression, age, political affiliation, disability, marital status, ancestry,
genetic information, citizenship, or veteran status in its application and
admission process, educational programs and activities, university facilities,
or employment policies.”

The question being asked is: With this policy stating it is unlawful to
discriminate against Sexual Orientation, can same-sex partners be granted the
Staff Scholarship benefit, even though the state of Texas does not recognize
the union?

Many thanks.
