Hi, Michele,

Cornell does not have a formal policy specifically on accessibility. Are you
asking about rest rooms, and things such as this? I do know that it is illegal
(and thus against university policy) in Ithaca to discriminate on the basis of
sex, which here would almost certainly include transgender individuals.

But it sounds like you’re asking for something that says “If she identifies as
a woman, but is biologically a man, than I (can or) can’t keep her out of the
women’s restroom,” or something like that? We probably wouldn’t go there,
because it’s such a volatile and vague subject. We would probably deal with
these on a case-by-case basis.

I would not relish being in charge of creating that policy, with all of the
controversy it would generate.

Subject: [acupa-l] Policy on accessibility for transgender employees and
students

Good afternoon,
Does anyone have a policy that covers the above subject? Elements of the
policy might include accessing bathrooms, locker rooms, and using preferred
names/pronouns. I would appreciate links to existing policies, if you have
one, or knowing if you have one in progress.

Thanks!
Michele
