Melinda,

Our “Access to University Facilities” policy states that visitors or volunteers
under 18 years of age must be directly supervised by authorized faculty or
staff, including in hazardous areas and must comply with the University’s
safety policies and procedures, including requirements regarding use of
personal protective equipment. See:
http://public.wsu.edu/~forms/HTML/BPPM/50_Safety_and_Security/50.20_Access_to_University_Facilities.htm

Our “Children in the Workplace” policy expressly prohibits employees from
bringing dependent children into hazardous areas. See:
http://public.wsu.edu/~forms/HTML/BPPM/60_Personnel/60.82_Children_in_the_Workplace.htm

Hope this helps —
Deb

Subject: Minors in Laboratories OR Minors and use of hazardous materials

Colleagues – could you provide me information about any policies or procedures
you might have that address the presence of minors (non-students under age 18)
in areas that use hazardous materials, biohazardous or infectious materials, or
any radioactive substances, or where physical hazards exist? Areas might
include laboratories, greenhouses, animal facilities, animal procedure rooms,
and animal housing areas for example.

Thank you.
