Pamina,

At Cornell, all leave is covered in our general "Time Away From Work" policy.
So we don't have a catastrophic leave policy, per se. Accrual of time off is in
one of two categories, either "vacation" or "health and personal."
Catastrophic leave would routinely be taken from the latter of these two.

We separate the concept of "catastrophic leave" only in regards to a "time
donation policy," whose policy statement I have pasted below. The full policy
is available at
https://www.dfa.cornell.edu/tools-library/policies/catastrophic-leave-donation.

"Cornell University provides catastrophic leave donation to assist eligible
staff members who have experienced a catastrophic, health-related event and
have exhausted all accruals, with the exception of up to five days of vacation,
which he/she may elect to save. When they have determined that the eligibility
requirements for Catastrophic Leave Donation have been met, colleges and units
have the flexibility to administer leave donation cases using their established
procedures."

I hope this helps.

Subject: [acupa-l] Catastrophic Leave Policies

Hi,

We are revising our catastrophic leave
policy<https://policy.unm.edu/university-policies/3000/3430.html>. Under the
current policy, catastrophic leave is not granted for periods of less than
three consecutive days, due to the difficulty of tracking such leave and the
burden to the Payroll Department. However, we can see the benefit of providing
such leave for employees who, for example, need to take off a few days for
receiving and recovering from chemo therapy treatments.

We would be interested in knowing if other colleges and universities have
catastrophic leave policies that allow for intermittent leave or leave for
periods of less than three days.

Thanks,
Pamina
