A lot of people in our community did hear about the hearings, and there
were a lot of e-mailed submissions (there's a webpage where you can read
them all). I was at the Toronto hearing, along with several other
opensource people, one Gnupg developer, one RedHat rep, and I understand
that the Ottawa hearing went similarly.

Having an "official CLUE voice" might be useful, although then we have to
worry about whether all our other grassroots voices might be subverting
our own cause; the fact that a lot of semirelated elements of the
community showed up on their own and each presented some facets of the
issue may have been helpful too.

We'll have to wait and see what legislation actually gets tabled; they're
not allowed to give sneak previews, but I'm still hoping that Canada
remains part of the free world.
