Why don't you just go back to square one and capture again in avi originally? Or, playback the mpg and capture that in avi, skipping the conversion stage.
As others have posted, mpg is not normally used at the editing stage, only for distribution. "Failing to return a video frame" sounds like a clue that you're not using a stable file in terms of having necessary frames.
