when I tried capturing in avi, the video quality was not as good as mpg
(I know that doesn't make sense . . . go figure) - I spent many, many
hours of trial and error before I settled on the best capturing method
(for me, anyway) . . . so far, my little system has worked fine and I've
been able to successfully export before . . .  I really dread going back
and starting over
 
with that in mind, one would think it was something I have changed in my
system since the last time I successfully exported a video - but I can't
figure out what it could be

Why don't you just go back to square one and capture again in avi
originally?  Or, playback the mpg and capture that in avi, skipping the
conversion stage.

As others have posted, mpg is not normally used at the editing stage,
only
for distribution.  "Failing to return a video frame" sounds like a clue
that
you're not using a stable file in terms of having necessary frames.
