I agree.
A relative of mine sends me videos captured with a still camera.
His camera is a Kodak, but this problem exists with most of these
consumer-level still cameras (that can capture video).
NOTE:
For anyone that's not familiar, some still cameras can capture
short videos as well. They typically use some proprietary form
of the mjpg (motion jpg) codec. I'm guessing that they use these
types of codec since they're already set up to capture still images
in the .jpg format.
The problem that I've experienced, is that these cameras frequently
use an odd (proprietary) codec. The videos play on a computer fine,
so long as you have their codec installed. The problem surfaces
when you try to import these videos into a program like Premiere.
You would think that, if you have the codec installed on your system
for viewing the footage, that video editing apps (should) be able to use
that same codec when importing these videos into an editing app like
Premiere. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case.
These cameras are really designed to create small videos for sharing
with friends and families. They're not really designed for use as a
video camera which would create videos for editing and universal
distribution (VCD, SVCD, DVD).
In my case, I had to give up on the ides of using these videos to
use for burning to VCD and DVD. I have numerous video editing
programs. None of these programs can properly import these videos.
Sorry the I couldn't give better advice.
