i preserved the entire posting (it's available for viewing thru yahoogroups anyway) and read the sequence several times (good practise for me as i moderate on another forum)... i'd said to myself "don't comment, it's not my dept" but i feel i should say something here as a m-e-m-b-e-r of this group.
~ i'd suggest that "unproductive and uncalled for, not to mention corny" comments are a lesser problem than aggressive ones. i'd also suggest that it does not reflect well on people's character when comments made are automatically assumed to be insulting... a poor, or even remote grasp of english has no bearing on a person's first reactions and second thoughts. the "tone" of a posting can be subject to endless debate and yet be no nearer a "this-is-what-he/she-was-really-saying" result by its end... only the poster will ever know for sure: moderators have to use their own judgement in this regard. but commonplace* insults need no such debates. the point they make is a-l-w-a-y-s clear: there is no "perhaps" about it. it was a mistake. in my not-so-humble opinion, an apology should be presented both to the other people involved** and to the group by vera, so we can move on. rob * believe me, they were commonplace... i've seen far more colourful, accurate and effective insults in my time... ** who, it should be noted, have already apologized for their part in this entertaining*** waste-of-time. *** sorry, but u know how some people slow down to look at car crashes? i love watching verbal trainwrecks take place. ----- Original Message ----- From: matango_3 Sent: Monday, January 03, 2005 3:09 PM Subject: Re: [AP] Member banned (was: Editing MPEG4? conversion?) --- In [email protected], Dana Hudes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > we cannot tolerate abusive language and vulgarity like vsmultimedia. > M. snell is -well- within the sort of attitude of typical hacker. > vsmultimedia came here demanding everything on a platter > and that we read her mind to know what's going on. Uh, no, she asked a question, reneged it and asked it properly and was mocked by Michael. No one comes to a forum like this for cheap standup comedy material, they come here for help, so what Michael Snell did was basically unproductive and uncalled for, not to mention corny. Was vera wrong in cursing? Perhaps, but considering that it was only Michael she said it to, maybe the problem was him. > Mike furthermore is responding to abuse from vsmultimedia. Abuse he instigated. > I highly recommend a version of Eric Raymond's essay on how to ask > questions on a mailing list be added to the group files. Too bad there isn't one on how to ANSWER question without being a wise ass. Again, a lot of people on this forum work hard and sometimes depend on fellow Adobe users for help, and the last thing anyone needs is obnoxious sarcasm. ---------- No virus found in this outgoing message.
