I use with G5's at work / PC's at home... the answer to the question "which is better" is less dramatic than ever imo.
The G5 is fully capable of giving any dual-processor PC a run for it's money: indeed it'd cost only slightly more to buy a nice G5 than an equivalent PC (we're talking $3000 - $5000 range, depending on what you're looking at). That said, After Effect render tests I've seen have shown a fully-tricked out PC (about $500 less on av.) gets the job done slightly quicker. here's a couple examples: http://www.mediaworkstation.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=25633-1 http://www.dvformat.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=27287 More can be found on various forums dedicated to NLE's and compositing... Note: a customized test by Brian Maffitt (Total Training) showed a vast speed differential in render-times favouring the G5... his is the only one I saw showing this however. Regarding OS's, since Windows2000, PC & Mac have been fairly similar in stability... both PC's & Mac's crash if used intensively and the question of "which crashes more" has to do with end-user maintenance, not the platform. In the final analysis, I'd suggest "pick your poison" and consider yourself lucky if you don't find yourself wondering "i wonder if should've switched" around the time a critical render decides to crash-and-burn. rob ----- Original Message ----- From: Adriel Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2005 9:21 PM Subject: Re: [AP] Apple is crap - Oh, OK > Unfortunately, for the price of a G5, most of us could build a PC that > was just as stable and much faster than a G5 Not at all. Win XP is in no way more stable than Unix which is OS X core. G5's are much faster than any Pentiums and don't just go by the number itself. Plus liquid cooled so no fans. ---------- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
