I dont find winxp fragile and my understanding is that it is pretty win 2000 
with some capabilities in multimedia that 2000 lacks. This explains the 
problem not collusion in the industry. well thats their story and I am 
sticking to it.
Sounds like you need to become more savvy in operating your computer if you 
live in fear of msconfig; it should be your friend. Read an article on the 
web about it, with all the spyware around a person needs to know how to use 
msconfig IMHO
