David,
   
  Since your friend says the mix is "all over the map" I assume that you can't 
accurately hear what's going on.  If you don't have a pair of decent audio 
monitors, that could be a big part of the problem.  I can't remember all of the 
elements of your mix, but if you have voice overs/dialog from people on camera, 
be sure to compress the vocal tracks fairly heavily.  This will keep them from 
suddenly "popping" out of the mix.

At some point I monitor with headphones jacked into the front panel of my 
Creative Audigy sound card. I don't wear cans religiously throughout the 
edit, I monitor from PC speakers and from the speaker in my monitor/TV, not 
at the same time of course, because of sync. I also listen to DVD-r outputs 
and VHS exports along the way.
