I just bought the HDV-20 Canon camcorder ... but, haven't had the chance to run video clips through my editor. The video I have reviewed on my HDTV is simply stunning.
Even though the "Pros" say HDV will be on its way out in 5yrs, many current camcorder reviews of HDD and miniDVD say something like "images just about as good as HDV." IMHO, I figured, " What the heck," until the compression technology & format standardization is accepted by all NLE's (and the quality improves), might as well stay with HDV. Also, from what I've read HDV is way easier to edit in NLE's. I picked up a Sony DCR-SR62 today that has a 30GB Hard Disk Drive, and I thought it would be an improvement over my old Sony DCR-TRV17, but I didn't realize that it does not record in DV format, like the mini-dv recorders. It delivers an MPG file that doesn't work correctly in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5. When I import the file, there is no sound. I can convert the file with Procoder Express and then I get the sound, but that degrades the quality even further. After browsing various sites on camcorders, it looks like mini-DV is still the better way to go, especially those that also have HDV. I would like to stay under $1,000, if possible. Is there any way to get good video out of the HDD types? If not, and I go with mini-DV, what's a good choice? Or am I better off just keeping the TRV17?
