Which version of Windows do you have? If you have
any version of 9x, Me or XP you can install Windows
over itself. Do not ever install Windows 2000 over
itself. BAD THINGS HAPPEN!
Somewhere on your drive should be a folder with the
Windows install files. The trick is booting it with
a floppy or CD-ROM then running the setup in that
folder. Fairly easy when the hard drive is in FAT16
or FAT32 format, harder when it's NTFS.
Another option is finding a local computer geek who
can make (or already has made) the Ultimate Boot CD
for Windows. www.ubcd4win.com
It's designed for 2000 and XP but does come in handy
for doing things to a 9x or Me system that won't
boot.
Yet another option is removing the hard drive from
the PC and connecting it to a working one. With
a laptop you can get an IDE to USB adapter cable.
See www.geeks.com for those. However, if you password
protected the drive or some folders, (in 2000 or XP)
that may not help- but the Ultimate Boot CD can login
to a 2000 or XP install with your username and
password
to give you access to all password protected stuff.
If money's a problem, many computer geeks will hack
for
food. ;) (I've had dinner free twice at a local
Mexican place simply because their computer happened
to be acting up when I went there.)
