I just added a 558 gig RAID 5 array to my PC. Four 200
gig Seagate SATA drives connected to a Silicon Image
PCI card. I have a 233 gig IDE drive in the box, not
connected, for use as an offline spare I can hook up
with a SATA converter should one of the RAID drives
quit.

The RAID setup cost me just over $260 Well worth it
since I've had a couple of drive failures (both Maxtor
drives!) eat bunches of data.

I also have a 74 gig drive with XP on it and another
150 gig drive for various stuff. If I plugged in the
233 gig I'd have a bit over 1,000 gigs total. :)

(All sizes are formatted capacity.)

The main problem with hugeabytes of storage is backing
it all up. An online backup using hard drives is just
more constantly spinning stuff to fail.

Right now the only offline backup with enough media
capacity to not require hundreds of them is Open
Linear Tape or OLT. The latest OLT stores 200
gigabytes UNCOMPRESSED on one tape. Unfortunately a
single OLT4 drive costs around $5,000. Ouch! However
the media is affordable at around $60 a tape.

If you want the ultimate backup, there are OLT systems
with almost 300 drives and a magazine capacity of
16,000 or more tapes.
