The easiest/most flexible method for achieving this (IMHO) is to use
After Effects (Assuming you have that available).  Check out the
CreativeCow.net AE Podcast on "Animating a Signature on Screen" (There
are Parts 1 and 2) for a process you can adapt to do your animated line.
