Lee.
You have no problems. ;-)
I also have a Sony Digital 8 camera which I now use as a second camera. As I
take a lot of stage shows, I leave the new HDD camera on a tripod in a fixed
position and record the entire show, and I use the Sony 8 as a roving camera. I
usually edit the clips together using audio as a reference/timecode.
I now have a Sony DCR-SR70, which is not HD, but is adequate for my purpose. It
has a 60Gb HDD and a 16hr battery. Its only output is USB. Instead of capturing
via firewire as I do with the Sony 8, I IMPORT from the DCR directly into
Premiere Pro and the xfer is much faster as it's not in real time as it is with
AVI. Of course I can still capture the Sony 8 via Firewire which happens to be
onboard with my motherboard/s.
So, I would recommend that you choose a new camera with USB output. Generally,
USB2 is faster than Firewire.
Regards,
Alan.

Subject: [AP] New Camcorder and MPEG2
I want to replace my old Sony Digital 8 camcorder. It still takes great
videos, but we would like one of the new smaller models.
All the new ones are HD which is OK, but they all capture in MPEG2 to
tape, CDs or internal hard drive.
My concern is this, I have been capturing with a Matrox Extreme100 card
thru a Firewire cable. Many of the new models do not have Firewire
output, only USB.
If I choose a model with a Firewire output, will the Matrox card convert
the MPEG2 to AVI for editing with Premiere Pro 1.5 or do I edit in
MPEG2? If I were to choose one without Firewire, what are my options?
