Yes Becky,

I am using a Sony DCR-SR70 which has a 60 GB hard drive. This was an essential
for me, as I record stage shows which will usually last over 1 hour for each
part of a two part performance. I now have no more worries about missing the
beginning or end, as I can start the camera early and I also know that I won't
run out of storage before the show finishes. I know I could run tapes in LP
mode, but the quality really isn't good enough. I also have a 16hr battery, so
that if there's no external power available, or I can't run a cable, I will not
run the battery flat before the end of a session.
The touch screen is extremely useful for 'spot-focussing' and 'spot-exposure
and metering'.

My camcorder has one or two 'down-sides'! Not being an HD camera, Sony in their
infinite wisdom decided not to put a proper viewfinder on it, relying just on
the touch screen. The lack of viewfinder is a pain in bright daylight or
sunlight and I had to have a special visor made to fit the touch screen, which
of course means I can't use the touch screen when the hood's fitted. Most of
the new HD cams seem to be fitted with a proper viewfinder and touch screen, so
I might try to afford one of those one day! :-)

The camera outputs in mpeg format into USB2, which is much faster than playing
AVI files through Firewire in real time. However, I have had problems with
downloads to the computer, as the camera breaks files into 2Gb clips which
loose a few frames in the transfer, but I can put the files together again
without loss, using VideoReDo. Premiere Pro is quite happy with either format
and I usually download the mpg files into the computer the import them into PP3.

Over all, I'm fairly happy with it, but we can all wish for better things. :-)

Regards,

Alan.

Hi, anybody using hard drive camcorders yet? And if you are, how do you like
them?
