By the way, another way to sync - I usually sync on audio (never tried a flash), therefore I'll have the cameras running as you did, then 'clap' two sticks together or something that makes a narrow spike in the audio. Even those cameras not connected to the mixer board will pick it up with their internal mic's. I'm sure a flash would work if it doesn't span multiple frames in duration.
